    FINAL GIFTS Book Review

I recently read a most extraordinary novel by Maggie Callanan and Patricia Kelley discussing some of the needs of the dying person. As a caregiver often working with the terminally ill I found this book to be most helpful. However, the information and stories shared in this book were written for anyone, especially families who have journeyed with a dying person or are on that journey now.
    Final Gifts book cover
“Final Gifts” was written by two hospice nurses who began to notice common themes of the needs of people approaching death. By listening carefully to their communication attempts, they were able to relieve anxieties experienced for many different reasons by a dying person.
Their writing style is simple and they share many true stories to help illustrate how we can help those who are nearing the end of their journey on earth. I believe this book not only helps the dying but is most helpful to those of us left behind. Although it is extremely difficult to journey with the dying, they often leave you with precious gifts.
This book will help you discover some of those gifts.

    Prayer for All the Deceased
By Thy resurrection from the dead, O Christ, death no longer hath dominion over those who die in holiness. So, we beseech Thee, give rest to Thy servants in Thy sanctuary and in Abraham's bosom. Grant it to those, who from Adam until now have adored Thee with purity, to our fathers and brothers, to our kinsmen and friends, to all men who have lived by faith and passed on their road to Thee, by a thousand ways, and in all conditions, and make them worthy of the heavenly kingdom.
Eternal rest, grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.
    |Letter of St. James|
